The Panama Reports

WITHOUT A CHANCE

Panama has a plastics problem: the city generates 190,000 tons of plastic waste each year and is the second largest waste producer in Latin America. The capital city alone creates 34,000 tons of waste monthly of which only 5% is recycled; and a large amount of uncollected waste often ends in rivers and drains and eventually the sea.

FOR A NEW LIFE

Panama's indigenous Guna people are being displaced from their islands due to rising water levels and overcrowding. Many are leaving behind their ancestral homes and adapting to a new way of life on the mainland. There's an emotional toll but also a financial hit. In particular, the relocation of the Gardí Subdug Island’s population serves as a crucial case study, offering insight into the complex issues of overcrowding, waste management, and cultural transformation. As we witness the preparations being made for their relocation, we explore the potential cultural shifts and economic implications for the Guna people.
